CHAPTER 22

The water rippled inside Nasr’s cup. The ground quaked beneath his feet before it was calm once more. He took a sip of the crisp liquid, continuing to read a passage from Sinan’s stolen leather-bound tome. The engines continued their attack without cessation into the night. The most unnerving to the men was the thump and crash of the trebuchets, whose destructive power had never been seen in war until now. Saladin utilized his invention with uninhibited resolve. The Christians must recognize that no fortress could stand before such a weapon and that to resist would only result in needless deaths.

He diffused the gray cloud of the simoom dhibwood with his free hand. The smell was one of wood and richly tilled earth to a regular man. It was a revolting poison to the djinn and knowing that they may linger nearby had made him even more cautious. So much so, he kept it lit even as he slept.

The tome beckoned him once more. Driven by self-discovery, he attempted to understand his father, and what had come to pass the night he was murdered by peasants in his home. His finger ran across the same passage that had drawn his eye time and time again.

Several order members were slain in a peasant uprising before it was quelled. It struck him as inconsistent that his father’s role in the organization had been degraded to almost nothing. Carefully, he flipped through the pages again, seeking anything he may have missed in the passages. His father’s name was only mentioned once in the entire history. Isma'il, a man of the Black sect under the guidance of Sinan. There was a mark next to his name, and he could not decipher its meaning. There were a few other names with the same mark, all starting in the last sixty years, but no explanation of why they bore it. He closed Sinan’s book.

It was almost as if his father had never existed in the Brotherhood’s eyes. A fact that confused Nasr, for his father had slain several djinn during his time. The heads of the beasts on display in the hall. Nasr had even snuck into the courtyard to see one of them presented to the Old Man. Nightmares had tormented him for the months after, and with good cause, the djinn must have been created within one. He had heard the men talk of their master, his father, with love and
